Cristiano Ronaldo, one of the world's two best players, one of the most well paid men on the planet, a fit and healthy young man and one of the most professional footballers around. So there's no way he'd miss a game of football for a terrible excuse.
Having run a Sunday League football team I've heard some rubbish excuses from the usual "I'm too hungover to move" (the ones who were still drunk just turned up to play) to the more unusual "I'll be late because I've got to buy bagels for my girlfriend."
However I'd have thought that once you get to being manager of the Champions League winners you wouldn't have to put up with rubbish excuses anymore. Bagels is one thing but most Sunday league bosses would be annoyed at a player for missing a match due to a sore throat. That's exactly why Ronaldo will miss Real's game against Espanyol:

"Cristiano will not travel with us, he has a sore throat, and he will stay at home. He is not ready [for Espanyol tomorrow].
"Bale took a big blow to his hip the other day. With so many games to play, we cannot take risks.
"If Cristiano, Gareth and Karim [Benzema] are at 100%, then they play. But that does not mean they must always play. And we have many games.
"My idea is to always rotate, so that players think in any moment they will be called to play. They all need to play, thats my idea."

And unsurprisingly that terrible excuse hasn't gone down too well with fans:
