Arsenal knocked out of two competitions in one night after Bayern Munich defeat

Arsenal were dealt a double blow on Wednesday night after crashing out of the Champions League.

Mikel Arteta's side were dumped out of the competition after a narrow defeat to German giants Bayern Munich.

Joshua Kimmich scored the only goal of the second leg to secure a 3-2 aggregate win for the Bundesliga side.

While it was a hugely important goal in the tie, it was also a significant one in the history of the Champions League.

Kimmich's header was the 31st goal scored in this season's quarter-finals, breaking the previous record of 30 - set during the 2003/04 season.

The defeat is a major blow for Arsenal, who will end the season without silverware unless they beat Liverpool and Manchester City to the Premier League title.

The defeat not only knocked them out of the Champions League, but also ruled them out of playing in the expanded FIFA Club World Cup in 2025.

Twelve European teams will compete at the tournament in the United States, including the winners of the Champions League from 2021 to 2024 - Chelsea, Real Madrid, Manchester City and the 2024 champion.

The other eight places in the tournament are decided by UEFA club coefficients.

Countries are limited to two teams outside of the Champions League winners, meaning Arsenal needed to win the competition this this season to qualify for the Club World Cup.

As a result of the Gunners' elimination, Austrian side FC Salzburg qualify for the Club World Cup due to their performance in Europe in recent seasons.

Salzburg and the recent Champions League winners will be joined by Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Milan, Porto, Benfica, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus and Atletico Madrid in the 2025 tournament.
