Everton have broken their own 20-year Premier League record despite Newcastle draw

Everton have broken a Premier League club record that has stood for nearly 20 years despite their 1-1 draw at Newcastle.

Sean Dyche's side have endured a nightmare 2024 so far, failing to win a single Premier League match.

It is only due to a run of five wins in six games towards the end of 2023 that Everton find themselves above the relegation zone, although they are only four points ahead of 18th-placed Luton with eight games to play.

While the Toffees could have perhaps been deemed unfortunate in some of their recent matches - they conceded a 95th-minute equaliser in the 1-1 draw with Brighton in February - Everton are desperate to pick up three points ahead of the run-in.

Their winless streak looked set to continue against Newcastle when Alexander Isak scored inside 15 minutes.

Substitute James Garner then hit the post for Everton, before a heroic piece of defending from Jarrad Branthwaite to block Isak's shot on the line gave them some renewed hope.

A Dominic Calvert-Lewin penalty ensured that they go away from Tyneside with something after a hard-fought display, but Nottingham Forest's win over Fulham propels them to within just one point of the Toffees.

By going 13 games without a win, Everton have broken their previous Premier League record of 12 matches without a win.

They began the 1994/95 season with three draws and nine defeats, before finally tasting with a 1-0 win over West Ham in November.

That wasn't enough to keep manager Mike Walker in his job, though, as he was sacked following the subsequent 0-0 draw at Norwich.

You would have to go back as far as 1937 to find a longer winless run by the Toffees, as they went 14 games without success between March and September of that year.

Legendary Everton striker Dixie Dean still played for the club at the beginning of that run, although was past his prime at that stage and left the club after being dropped at the start of the 1937/38 season.
