Kobbie Mainoo becomes first Man Utd player since Paul Pogba to produce stunning record vs Luton

Kobbie Mainoo becomes first Man Utd player since Paul Pogba to produce stunning record vs Luton

Mainoo was impressive again.

Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo followed in Paul Pogba's footsteps after a stunning display in his side's 2-1 win over Luton on Sunday.

Mainoo was one of the star players on the pitch during what was a chaotic clash at Kenilworth Road.

Rasmus Hojlund opened the scoring for United after just 46 seconds, to score in his sixth consecutive fixture in all competitions.

The Dane then scored again on seven minutes as Erik ten Hag's side looked destined for their fourth consecutive Premier League victory.

But Luton worked their way back into the contest, and United failed to hold control over proceedings as Carlton Morris pulled one back on 14 minutes.

Rob Edwards' side probed for the equaliser for the rest of the match, having 22 shots at Andre Onana's goal and having 58 per cent possession over the 90 minutes.

But, despite centre-back Gabriel Osho hitting the crossbar in second half added time, the equaliser was not forthcoming - meaning United held on for what could be a crucial victory come May.

Ten Hag's side, though, did receive criticism from supporters, with senior players such as Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro and Marcus Rashford among those called out.

But Mainoo was one of the most composed players on the pitch - and now stands in elite company alongside Paul Pogba when it comes to one particular statistic.

The 18-year-old completed six dribbles against Luton, which is one fewer than Pogba managed during a game in April 2022.

But along with the France midfielder, they have completed more dribbles in a single match than any other United player in the Premier League since then.

As per WhoScored, the United player closest to Mainoo's tally against the Hatters was Diogo Dalot (two), while Luton's Ross Barkley completed five dribbles.

Mainoo's incredible performances at club level have sparked plenty of talk surrounding an England call-up for Euro 2024.

But he is also eligible to represent Ghana, although he has represented England at various youth levels.

According to the Daily Mail, the United academy graduate will not look to make a formal decision about his international future until he is 'in contention for competitive senior caps' - meaning Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate may want to act fast in order to convince the midfielder that his international future is with England.
